SIX OF THE BEST.

6 Reasons to turn off your television set and go and do something less boring instead.

1.  By the time you die, you could easily have clocked up 12 years (of 24 hour days) in front of the TV.
Just think of all the wonderful life experiences you could have in that time.

2.  Watching  TV burns fewer calories than doing nothing at all.
(No, it's true!  It actually slows down your metabolic rate.)

3.  Real people don't look like the gorgeous actors and actresses we see on TV
(or maybe it's just me and the people I live amongst!)

Not watching so much is likely to make you feel much better about yourself.

4.  Real people don't tend to have such perfect houses / jobs / cars  as the characters on TV.
Maybe we wouldn't have to work so hard for so many things if we weren't tempted by them every evening.

5.  If you plan your evening's viewing by looking up a TV listings guide
(like the one you can access from our What's On button on the home page),

you won't end up watching whatever comes on before and after your favourite programmes.

6.  If you are even more organised and simply record the programmes you want to watch, whilst getting on with other things, you'll probably find you never get round to watching what you've recorded.
Most people only watch about half of what they record.

I got all this information from a very interesting book that's just been published by
Dr Aric Sigman,
called "Remotely Controlled", published by Vermilion (paperback).
If you're feeling very swotty and self-righteous, you could read it for yourself.
Do be warned, however, that your family will hate you for all the nagging after
you've read it!

There were three new entries in the top 50 girls’ names:  Kiera (no. 38), Scarlett (no. 47) and Libby (no. 48).  Kiera and Scarlett are presumably popular because of Kiera Knightley and Scarlett Johansson.
